Have you considered who is driving the majority of taxis and trucks on South African roads?

I am not convinced taxis have a higher proportion of accidents than anyone else. Truck accidents will make the traffic reports because a large vehicle is more likely to make the road impassable.

Because they are “Professional” drivers and spend all day doing the same thing, and apparently zone out.

If that is true maybe it’s because commercial vehicles are never off the road, and it’s quite possible they do more than x10 times the mileage of private vehicles. Also, there is a tendency for familiarity to breed contempt, commercial drivers can often be a little too complacent.

The answer is simple. RESPECT for fellow road users and the law is lacking by 99.99% of taxi and truck drivers.

Well I think it is speed, we went away last weekend, when we were coming back to PE on Sunday afternoon, there was this big toyota taxi (long distance taxi) in front of us with a trailer. Not a normaly Toyota Taxi I think it is called a Quantum ?It had a sticker with 100 on the back, but it was doing at least 160 kmph. We were driving behind it averaging 140 kmph but it was in front the whole time and later disappeared.

Because of our atrocious regard for driving in this country.
In other countries, driving (especially trucking) is a respected discipline; drivers undergo all sorts of training etc before he even sees the keys of their trucks. Also they actually believe in things such as maintenace of their fleets.

Come to SA, and here you see the majority of truck drivers have nowhere near the experience or capability of other countries drivers. I think the standard interview for drivers goes like this:
    boss: Can you drive?
    employee: eYes, boss.
boss: Do you have code 10?
    e:eYes boss
    b: good! youre hired!

Its as if the managers couldnt give a toss whether a driver can actually drive safely and properly; they dont give a toss if a badly trained driver in a deathtrap not worthy of being a skorrokorro ploughs into an intersection, killing bystanders left right and center.
Why is it this way? Why else? You save lots of money if you dont need to train drivers, or see to the roadworthiness of fleets…
“Why shell out for an advanced drivers course? Hes only the driver…”
THAT thinking is exactly what is wrong.

Also, i think theres is no way a truck should be allowed on the highway in peak traffic. The hiway btwn Edenvale and the airport must be one of the worst. Ive very often been held up, puttering along at 50kmh, by trucks taking up all 3 lanes!

Taxis of course need no reason as to their bad driving…

Let me throw a rock in the bush and see what came out:
    1. How many hooligans is there on the road
A Truck needs a certain distance to stop and motorists (hooligans) don’t take it in consideration when they pass a truck and come to a complete halt in front of a Track so what happen next “a accident”
Taxi drivers are in a class of there own.
No respect what so every for any rule they are the rule
